U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell endorsed setting a 2009 deadline for U.S. television broadcasters such as Viacom's CBS to switch to digital signals. After urging Congress to set an unspecified deadline in testimony before the Senate Commerce Committee, Powell was asked by reporters whether he supports a January 2009 deadline proposed by FCC staff. "Yes," Powell told reporters. "I'm saying it really strongly."
